Happy to have you Fresh Meat!
Don't worry, there is a lot to the league, but once we get drafting it all gets easier and totally worth it.

Quick Intro...
Name: Dave From: Illinois Occupation: Computer Science Teacher Alma mater: Indiana University Favorite MLB Team: Chicago Cubs Favorite Player (Present): Rizzo Favorite Player (Past): Ryno Best Player Ever (All Sports): Jordan Current Baseball Factoid: "Back to the Future 2" predicted the Cubs to win the World Series last year. Favorite Baseball Factoid: Shoeless Joe Jackson batted .375 in the '19 Series, didn't make an error, but still was banned for life. Favorite Baseball Statistic: OBP Fun Fact: Long before internet betting, I placed my first sports bet March of 1997 in Vegas: $10 on the Florida Marlins to win the World Series. And yes, after a 90+ win season, they went on win me what seemed like a lot of money at the time. To this day, Livan Hernandez is my favorite September call up.
Quick question... What prevents an owner from blowing his load in any single season? Shouldn't there be a cap for at least the draft?

Quick question... What prevents an owner from blowing his load in any single season? Shouldn't there be a cap for at least the draft? Oh yeah, sorry I forgot to get back to you about this! We thought about coming up with an initial salary cap for the draft, but decided it went too much against what we'd like to do in the league. We want the cap to be fluid from year to year, and reflect the average team salary(+125% = salary cap). We really like our soft salary cap (luxury tax salary cap, like the MLB), which will allow teams to spend as much as they'd like, but be penalized for going over the average team spending. We tried to think of ways to come up with this number ourselves, but I think the cap works better when it really reflects what the average team spends. It worked out a lot better than I thought it would last time around.

Quick question... What prevents an owner from blowing his load in any single season? Shouldn't there be a cap for at least the draft? Good question, Dave. Before I try and answer your question, just keep in mind we are trying to imitate the real MLB as much as we can. With that being said, I believe there is an error on our part by saying there is a salary cap, because technically, there isn't one. Its really a luxury tax but we just call it a 'soft salary cap'. If a team wants to draft/spend a ridiculously amount of money, we believe they should be able to do so. However, they will be penalized for being over our 'soft salary cap' (aka luxury tax). If you are one dollar over, then you will not qualify for the league revenue sharing, which ends up being a significant amount of money, or at least it has in years past. Then, after a certain amount of money being over the soft salary cap (luxury tax), that team ends up paying a fee, just as in the MLB. I certainly hear and understand the complaints about there not being a number before the draft, but when we initially created a league similar to this, we projected a soft salary cap for teams to try and shoot for if they wanted to be under the cap. However, our predictions were waaaay off and ended up being a lot more than we initially thought. (Real life example: I think we initially predicted the soft salary cap (luxury tax) to be around $160, when in actuality, it was over $220. This caused more problems and contention than anything else, especially for those teams who were abiding by that number as law.) Seth and I will try and predict a number in which we think the salary cap (luxury tax) will be around, but please keep in mind, this number will not be set in stone. Directly following our draft, we will figure out the real salary cap for the year, and then teams will have a couple weeks to make trades before the season starts to shed or gain salary. Then, once that date comes, half of that teams salary will be owed and count towards that teams salary for the year (see constitution for rest of rules). I hope this somewhat makes sense but feel free to give me a call so I can better explain over the phone. 678-814-7040

I get the luxury tax concept, and like it. And with player salaries already set, that controls spending to an extent anyways.

Name: Stuart
From: Born and raised in Suwanee, GA but I have lived in Salt Lake City for the past 7 years or so.
Occupation: Career Student. I should be on my last semester though (knock on wood)
Alma mater: University of Utah
Favorite MLB Team: Atlanta Braves
Favorite Player (Present): Andrelton Simmons
Favorite Player (Past): John Smoltz
Best Player Ever (All Sports): Michael Jordan
Current Baseball Factoid: (least favorite factoid): Frank Wren is the worst general manager in the history of baseball. Fact!
Favorite Baseball Factoid: More people attend MLB games in a given year than the other entire 4 major sports in the United States combined (NFL,NBA,NHL,MLS)
Favorite Baseball Statistic: According to the new defensive WAR stat, Andrelton Simmons is the best defensive player to ever play the game as he holds the best defensive year ever for any player at any position
Fun Fact: I was 10 years old and cried my eyes out when Eric Gregg handed the Marlins a win over the Braves in the 1997 NLCS, specifically, game 5 in which Livan Hernandez pitched. Even though Eric Gregg is long dead from a heart attack, I still wish terrible things on his posterity
